The Arcadia Historical Society played a major role in an American Planner Award presented to Society board member Scott Hettrick June 22 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
In an announcement in April of Hettrick being named the winner of the APA Los Angeles Chapter’s Distinguished Leadership – Citizen Planner award, the City of Arcadia said Hettrick has “clearly demonstrated outstanding leadership through countless hours of volunteer efforts and his work in a number of areas such as his preservation efforts through the Arcadia Historical Society’s “History Lives Here” historical marker program…”
In a letter written to the APA, Doug Failing, executive director of the MTA’s highway program, said that, “Without a City Ordinance or other programs aimed at protecting historic resources in Arcadia, Mr. Hettrick and the Arcadia Historical Society have initiated their own preservation efforts to preserve Arcadia’s history. So far the Committee has dedicated eight historical markers in Arcadia which defines the historical significance of the structure or place that still stands or once stood at a specific location, and put in the context of the notable related organization and events associated with the building. He should be applauded for developing the community support necessary for this program and for preserving Arcadia’s history.”
The City also noted Hettrick’s reporting of local news, activities, and surveys on hot-button topics through his ArcadiasBest.com web site and e-newsletter; more than two years of volunteer work with the City’s General Plan Action Committee, and his volunteer lobbying through his role as co-chairman of the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs Forum that contributed to the successful approval of the Gold Line Foothill Extension project.
At the ceremony of the 1,100-member group Wednesday, the Society’s Historical Markers were featured in a PowerPoint presentation on the screen of the historic theater.
Every year, the APA recognizes outstanding planning and environmental achievements by individuals, cities and business. The efforts of these individuals and organizations are honored for innovative and exceptional planning for the physical environment. Both award recipients are now eligible for State-wide recognition.
