The Baldwin Lake marker is the latest addition to the History Lives Here series. Dedicated Sept. 13, the marker stands along the roadside on the east side of Baldwin Lake, directly across from the Queen Anne Cottage.
Richard Schulhof, CEO of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, said people “will be standing in line” to read the Baldwin Lake marker and learn the history of this unique place.
At the dedication ceremony, Arcadia Mayor Pro-Tem April Verlato reflected on her visits to the Arboretum as a child, and now, with her own children. City Council member Peter Amundson also spoke of the importance of the Arboretum to his family and how they have enjoyed its beauty over the years.
Sandra Maravilla of the office of County Supervisor Kathyrn Barger presented a certificate congratulating the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation and the Arcadia Historical Society on the newly installed marker.
The Arboretum’s Schulhof shared some facts about the importance of the lake and its designation on the National Register of Historic Places.
Dana Baldwin and Margaux Viera, descendants of Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin, were on hand for the dedication. Historic Marker Chairman Jim Considine and Dan Foliart emceed the afternoon event.
The creative team responsible for the marker’s design and installation attended as well. B&H Signs’ senior designer Alex Cruz and installer Dan Sargent beamed with pride at the latest of their creations. Sargent even showed off the blister he got on his right hand digging up soil that “was as hard as a rock.”
All Arcadia Historical Society “History Lives Here” markers have been designed by B&H Signs of Monrovia, retaining a uniform style, color and presentation.
The Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation and the Arcadia Historical Society hosted the wine and cheese reception that followed.
