Keynote speaker Darrell Vance, Heritage Program Manager for the US Forest Service drew an estimated 53 plus people last Thursday to the Arcadia Historical Society’s January 31 General Meeting held at the Lutheran Church of the Cross’ assembly hall. Vance’s hour-long oratory on “Stories The San Gabriels Tell”, was an interesting historical panorama of our local mountains. Aided by seventy-five slides, Vance chronicled the geological formation and composition of our local mountains, the Paleolithic transitions, California’s very first discovery of gold and the mining camps and towns that sprung up during the Gold Rush.
Hearing about the bygone times of close-by twentieth century lodges and recreational locations was enchanting, and the heretofore secret 1974 disassembly of three local mountain nuclear missile silos- vital components of the North American Aerospace Command (NORAD) system the United States deployed during the Cold War era with Russia was a captivating climax to Mr. Vance’s thoroughly enjoyable presentation.
