The presentation “Arcadia’s Legendary Artists of Historic Landmarks” is set for Saturday, March 10, at the Public Library.
The illustrated lecture will examine the work of two local watercolor artists, Edna Lenz and Justine Wishek. The Arcadia Historical Society’s Carol Libby will offer a synopsis of their work and provide the historical background on each landmark.
The presentation will be in the Cay Mortenson Auditorium, with an optional tour of the Arcadia History Room.
The library’s collection includes 100 watercolors by the team of Lenz & Wishek that depict the history of the San Gabriel Valley.
Lenz and Wishek met in an adult education art class in Arcadia in the 1950s, deciding to combine their talents toward fashioning an artistic and chronological history of the Valley, from Indian times to the 1950s.
Over a period of 15 years, the artists sketched and painted landmarks from Arcadia and other area cities, including Monrovia, Sierra Madre, Azusa, Pasadena and South Pasadena. They were popular lecturers in the area.
Refreshments will be available at the March 10 event, which begins at 2 p.m.
