Detective Jeff Stark, who oversees the Explorer program, and Beverly Street, president of the Friends of the Arcadia Historical Society, presented the first Lt. Edward Ostashay Scholarship to Miguel Angel Hernandez.
Miguel, along with other police Explorers, helped the Friends of the Arcadia Historical Society at two fundraising events this year. They assisted with the Historical Fashion Show in February and then also helped with the Annual Garden Tea in May. Truly, the Explorers represent our community well.
Detective Stark, after working with Miguel, knew he was the one who met the qualifications to receive the Ostashay Scholarship.
Edward Ostashay retired from the Arcadia Police Department in 2002. “Eddie O,” as he was fondly referred to by fellow officers, passed away in 2013. The scholarship was posthumously established by the Friends of the Arcadia Historical Society in memory of and in tribute to Ostashay. It is of note that he was instrumental in restoring the historic 1959 Ford Galaxy police car that is seen at local events in and around Arcadia (pictured below).
As a part of the award, Gene Glasco, past president of the Arcadia Historical Society, chauffeured Miguel and his parents in the historic police car restored by Ostashay to the Arcadia High graduation June 18 at the Santa Anita Race Track.
